An attempt to create a world record with a 14-kilometre-long crocheted national flag was made at Akkayyapalem Port Stadium on Saturday under the banner of ‘Project Tiranga’, organised by Mahila Manovikas.

More than 40,000 hand-crocheted pieces of the national flag, contributed by people from different states across India and countries including the USA, UK, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, were brought together for the initiative.

The crocheted pieces were arranged in 14 rows on iron poles surrounding the stadium, forming a continuous tricolour bunting extending approximately 14 kilometres. The organisers said the initiative aimed to surpass the previous record of 11.78 kilometres.

Preparations began at around 6 am and continued for nearly 12 hours as volunteers worked to assemble the crocheted flag.

Representatives from Guinness World Records inspected the arrangement and recorded the measurements, according to the organisers. The official result is expected after completion of the verification process.

The organisers said the initiative was aimed not only at creating a world record but also at promoting the traditional art of crochet and encouraging patriotism, national unity and participation among the youth.
