Security forces shot dead a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant during an counter infiltration operation close to the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, defence officials said.
Hours after the bid was foiled, Army hit out at Pakistan for "continuous efforts to infuse terrorism" in Kashmir and "disrupt peace and harmony while putting on the facade of ceasefire understanding."
The latest infiltration bid was foiled in Tangdhar Sector during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Srinagar based defence spokesman Col Emron Musavi said a joint operation was launched at Sudpura Tangdhar based on specific information regarding infiltration from J&K Police which was corroborated by other intelligence agencies.
"Alert troops on anti-infiltration grid intercepted two terrorists trying to infiltrate into own side in the forward area close to the Line of Control. At around 1:45 am, the infiltrating terrorists were fired upon, leading to elimination of one terrorist," the spokesman said, adding, "however, taking advantage of darkness the other terrorist managed to flee to PoK ( Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir) side."
He said a search operation was launched in the morning resulting in recovery of one AK series rifle, two pistols and large quantity of ammunition and war like stores.
The slain has been identified as Mohammed Shakur, belonging to Syedpura in PoJK.
The spokesman said a number of inputs pertaining to possible infiltration by a group militants through Sudpura were received by the security forces.
"Timely action and close coordination between Indian Army, JKP and other Intelligence agencies led to foiling of the infiltration attempt and potential threat to peace in hinterland," he added.
Army also hit out at Pakistan for continuous efforts to infuse terrorism in Kashmir and disrupt peace and harmony while putting on the facade of ceasefire understanding.
"Continued engagements along the Line of Control are uncanny reminders of efforts by Pakistan to infuse terrorism in Kashmir and disrupt peace and harmony while putting on the facade of ceasefire understanding. Youth in PoK are being used as cannon fodder by Pakistan state policy from last three decades with a fruitless aim to constantly disrupt progress towards collective peace," the spokesman said.
Defence officials say militants always step up efforts to sneak into the Valley from across as it becomes difficult for them to enter after snowfall.
