As the Jubilee Hills by-election gains momentum, the condition of the roads across the constituency has become a major talking point — not just among political parties, but among frustrated residents who have been navigating cratered streets and overflowing drains for weeks. The recent rains have exposed the poor state of civic infrastructure, turning several stretches of what was once Hyderabad’s most sought-after locality into virtual obstacle courses.

From Road No. 45 to Film Nagar and from Borabanda to Yousufguda, potholes have turned into mini ponds, and open drains have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The heavy downpour last week worsened the damage, with water stagnation and sewage overflow adding to the misery. Angry citizens say the government has failed to act, despite repeated complaints. “We pay the highest property tax in the city, but look at our roads — they resemble rural lanes after a storm,” said Rajasekhar, a resident of Jubilee Hills.

Opposition leaders, especially from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), have seized upon the issue to corner the ruling Congress government. BRS working president KT Rama Rao, while campaigning for party candidate Maganti Sunitha Gopinath, slammed the government for “turning Hyderabad into a city of potholes and promises.” He accused the Congress of neglecting urban maintenance while focusing only on political survival. “If they can’t maintain roads in Jubilee Hills, how can they claim to develop Telangana?” he asked.

Local BRS leaders allege that civic funds meant for road restoration have been diverted or misused, while GHMC officials blame delayed tenders and erratic rains for the slow pace of repairs. Meanwhile, social media is flooded with images of damaged roads and stranded vehicles, further fueling public anger.

As the by-election nears, the state of Jubilee Hills’ roads has become symbolic — not just of urban decay, but of the voters’ growing impatience with unfulfilled promises and administrative apathy.
