As the monsoon brings abundant rainfall to the region, the authorities are closely monitoring the water levels in major reservoirs to ensure proper management of water resources. In response to the rising water levels, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has taken proactive measures by opening the crest gates of two significant reservoirs, Osman Sagar (commonly known as Gandipet) and Himayat Sagar.
Current Status of Osman Sagar (Gandipet)
Full Tank Level (FTL): 1790.00 Feet (3.900 TMC)
Present Level: 1787.40 Feet (3.307 TMC)
Inflows: 2000 Cusecs
Outflow: 852 Cusecs
Gates: 4 gates opened, releasing 2 feet of water.
Himayat Sagar:
Full Tank Level (FTL): 1763.50 Feet (2.970 TMC)
Present Level: 1761.50 Feet (2.521 TMC)
Inflows: 2200 Cusecs
Outflow: 2750 Cusecs
Gates: 4 gates opened, discharging water at a rate of 2 feet.
The opening of the crest gates is a precautionary step taken by the HMWS&SB to regulate the water levels in these reservoirs during the monsoon season. With continuous inflows and limited outflows, releasing water downstream into River Musi has become necessary to maintain the balance and avoid any potential flooding.
The authorities are closely monitoring the water levels to prevent any unforeseen emergencies and to ensure that the downstream areas receive a regulated flow of water. The crest gates facilitate controlled discharge, minimizing the risk of excess water accumulation.
The HMWS&SB has urged residents living downstream to remain cautious during this period and stay updated about any further advisories or precautions issued by the authorities. By taking these proactive measures, the HMWS&SB aims to safeguard the well-being of the citizens and protect the surrounding areas from potential water-related hazards.
