Basara I DNS: A two-day chess competition was held on April 6–7, 2025, at the RGUKT campus, aimed at encouraging rural youth to take up the game of chess. The event was jointly organized by Chess Network and GapSkills Learning Solutions, Hyderabad, and witnessed participation from around 200 students.

The competition was inaugurated by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ganta Chakrapani, RGUKT Vice Chancellor Prof. A. Goverdhan, and OSD Prof. Muralidharshan.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Ganta Chakrapani emphasized the importance of chess in today’s digital age. “As students are increasingly drawn to mobile phones and social media, chess serves as a powerful tool to enhance concentration and focus. Youth must take up such games to stay away from distractions,” he noted.

Prof. A. Goverdhan expressed happiness over the event being hosted at RGUKT and assured continued support for such initiatives. He remarked, “Chess not only sharpens intelligence but also cultivates the ability to grasp complex subjects effectively.”

Chess Network founding member Sudhir Kodati said the event aims to create a cultural shift by popularizing chess among rural youth. The competitions followed the Swiss league format with each player competing in seven rounds. Winners received cash prizes and 50 chess boards.

Key members of Chess Network including President Sanjay Gajjala, General Secretary Hari Sreramoju, executive members Rajanna and Kiran Marreddy, along with RGUKT Sports Special Officer Prabhakar Rao, PD Shyambabu, PET students, and others actively participated in the event.
