NTPC completed 47 years of glorious service to nation on November 07, 2022. Since its inception on November 7, 1975, it has established itself as the dominant power major with presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business. From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources. During its glorious journey NTPC has emerged as India’s largest power company, with a vision “To be the World’s leading Power Company, Energizing   India’s Growth”. Present installed capacity of NTPC Group is 70,254 MW (including 12,595 MW through JVs/Subsidiaries) comprising of 58 NTPC Stations (25 Coal based stations, 7 gas based stations, 1 Hydro station, 1 small hydro, 23 Solar PV and 1 Wind based Station) and 25 Joint Venture stations (8 coal based, 4 gas based, 8 hydro, 1 small hydro 2 Wind and 2 Solar PV).

Recent Performance of NTPC:
Despite the issues emerging on the global and national business horizons, NTPC is taking concerted and proactive initiative which will boost growth in the coming days.
Some of the significant achievements are:
NTPC Group generated 204 Billion Units in H1 FY23 as compared to 177 Billion Units in H1 FY22, an increase of ~15%.
NTPC’s standalone gross generation in H1 FY23 is 176 Billion Units as compared to 151 Billion Units in the corresponding previous period, registering an increase of ~16%.
NTPC Coal stations achieved a Plant Load Factor of 77.27% as against the National Average of 64.46% during H1 FY23.
Ministry of Corporate Affairs has approved amalgamation of KBUNL and NPGCL with NTPC.
The resolution plan to facilitate the acquisition of Jhabua (1X600 MW) power station in Madhya Pradesh has been approved by NCLT.
Commissioned India’s largest floating solar plant at Ramagundam (100 MW) in Telangana and 2nd largest floating solar plant (92 MW) at Kayamkulam in Kerala. Hon’ble Prime Minister has dedicated these two projects to the nation on July 31, 2022. With this we have 242 MW of floating solar capacity, by far the largest fleet in the country.
The 1st Units of 2X660 MW coal-based project in Bangladesh was synchronized with the grid recently.
Targets Ahead for NTPC:
The Indian power sector is one of the most diversified in the world. With an installed capacity of over 404 GW, the country registered the highest peak demand of 211.86 GW on June 10, 2022, and the energy met was 4722 MU. The economic growth along with increasing electrification and per capita usage will further provide impetus to the rising demand for electricity.
NTPC is working on Energy Storage space and discussions are underway for adding nuclear capacity.
NTPC is in discussion with Nuclear Power Corporation of India for setting up a 1400 MW green field nuclear project in Madhya Pradesh through a Joint Venture route.
NTPC is considering a few expansion projects at the existing pit-head plant locations. In this direction, we have already finalized the tender for 2X660 MW capacity at Talcher (TTPS) as a replacement project.
On the renewables side, we have formed a new Company, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) under which we plan to consolidate almost all our green assets.
We have started putting in place firm plans for achieving 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032 as committed earlier. Apart from the 2.5 GW capacity which is already commissioned, nearly 4 GW of capacity is in the construction stage and 5 GW capacity is in the tendering stage. The work at the largest renewable energy park (4750 MW) at Khavda in Gujarat has started.
We have also signed MoU with the Government of Rajasthan for the allocation of land parcels for setting up an aggregate renewable capacity of 10 GW. We have also taken action for setting up around 1600 MW of merchant capacity. In the green hydrogen space, work is in progress at Leh on an integrated project for mobility, where five intra-city buses would ply using green hydrogen. In addition to the green methanol pilot project at Vindhyachal, the work for blending green hydrogen with natural gas (PNG) at Kawas is also in progress.
NTPC is exploring various options using Hydrogen like transport, blending with natural gas, green ammonia, methanol, etc., and aspire to lead a “Hydrogen Economy” in India and globally.

Sustainability & ESG:
The Company could reduce specific water consumption by 4.82%. Besides, the Company is actively working on Biomass co-firing. We have already fired 78,000 MT of biomass pellets and prevented nearly 45,000 acres of farm fire.
The Flue gas-based desalination plant at Simhadri and the Solar desalination plant at Vallur got approvals from BIS. This shall help in the supply of treated water commercially.
In FY22 we spent ₹356.72 crores on various CSR activities.
Company has partnered with the Archery Association of India since 2018. Recently, an MoU signed for Rs. 115 Crore for promotion of Archery.
NTPC is working with NITI Aayog and has signed a Statement of Intent for preparing our “Net Zero” plan in line with the country’s commitment.
